Migration, climate change, ageing populations, scarcity of raw materials, poverty… Companies have to choose whether to suffer or face these challenges. By paying attention to the world around us, we encourage innovation and view these challenges as opportunities. The Belgian Chambers of Commerce wants to be the reference partner for companies that want to do business in a sustainable manner.
In 2020 the Federation took on the challenge of to win the Voka Charter for Sustainable Entrepreneurship and to be awarded the SDG Pioneer Certificate by 2024.
This means that in three years we carry out actions within all 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which will then be evaluated by an external evaluation committee. The final step of our three-year trajectory has since been successfully completed with the award on April 18 of the VCDO as “VCDO Laureate 2024.”
But the final crowning achievement will be the awarding of UNITAR’s SDG Pioneer certificate by CIFAL Flanders, partner of Belgian Chambers, Voka and CCI Wallonie, during the Voka Sustainable Business Day on 24 October.
A well-designed whistleblower policy is important for sustainable and efficient operations. In Brussels, Beci initiated the 303030 Charter. Its signatories, partners of the City Climate Challenge, are committed to sharing their resources, knowledge and know-how and to innovating together. Their goal? To reduce the Brussels-Capital Region’s CO2 emissions by at least 30% in 10 years. The private sector can thereby support and strengthen public policies and be part of the sustainable transformation of the urban spaceby following a grid of concrete objectives and quantified KPIs.
CIFAL Flanders is an international training centre connected to the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) based in Antwerp. It focuses on sustainable development objectives, business and human rights, sustainable and circular business models and smart and sustainable cities.
The Federation’s partnership with CIFAL Flanders helps the Chambers acquire the necessary expertise necessary to aptly guide companies and to incorporate sustainability within the Chamber as well.
